Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca)
These snow white owls make their nests on the barren ground of the Arctic tundra. They like the wide open spaces of the wind-swept tundra plains. The adults are magnificent in their white plumage, but the young, which are brownish balls of fluff before growing feathers that are both black and white until finally, they are pure white as adults. Lemmings are a favorite food of these silent hunters of the sky.
