Fax Three from the field via messenger

4/15/98
Location: 90 miles NNW Ambler, Alaska
Temperature -15 degrees F

We have joined the main herd—too numerous to count them. Flew from Ambler approximately 90 miles North West to an apparently unnamed river and canyon system which winds a tortuous path through the Brooks Range.

We will begin at approximately the same north latitude as where we finished the first part of the Tuttu Trek. Then we will continue north with the herd to just south of the calving grounds.

This written message is being given to a messenger to take back to a small village that has a fax. Hope you get it. We are OK and traveling fast and light to cover a long distance. Learning more every day. We carry no radio at all now. Weather minus 15 to 22 degrees F. Will contact you in about 7-8 days.
