June 15, 2001  -  Arctic Visitor  -  Joe Creek, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

click to view full-sizedWhen I'm a guest in someone's home, I'm on my best behavior. I'm clean and considerate with the hope of receiving an invitation to return. In the arctic, the grizzly bear wins the title of "most demanding host" paws down. Screw up around Old Griz, and you won't be visiting the arctic, or anywhere else, again. Am I afraid to be in bear country? No. I'm just hyper-mindful of my manners. I keep a clean kitchen deserving of Martha Stewart's approval. I pick up after myself. I let my host know of my whereabouts. If I see Mrs. Griz and her cubs, I give them plenty of space.

For the past two days, I've watched my host forage in his tundra home. His blonde fur shines in the sunlight like a lighthouse flashing a beacon. He knows I'm here. And if I behave myself, maybe he'll let me come back.
