The National Petroleum Reserve contains 23 million mostly untapped acres; oil companies are just beginning to drill and remove oil.
The Alaska National Wildlife Refuge contains 19 million acres, reaching from the foothills of the Brooks Mountains in the south to the Beaufort Sea. The eastern boundry is shared with Canada.
Area 1002, within the ANWR, is 1.5 million acres set aside for possible oil exploration in response to geologists guesses that this area sequesters billions of barrels of recoverable oil.
The coastal plain of the Refuge provides the calving ground for the 129,000 strong Porcupine caribou herd.
